Steps to use Pumpkin Stencil Maker (Photo to Carving Template)

Choose a photo with a clear subject, pick the shadow or outline style and move the threshold until the face reads well. Add smoothing to remove small details, raise the minimum bridge so the skin holds, enter the stencil width in cm or inches and download the PDF.

How Pumpkin Stencil Maker (Photo to Carving Template) processes your input

Threshold and edge logic shared with the Black and White Image Threshold and Photo to Coloring Outline tools, box-blur smoothing, cut-out specks smaller than a bridge removed, skin strips thinner than the bridge widened, and floating skin pieces tied to the rest with a bridge or carved away if tiny.

A portrait 18 cm wide prints on one A4 page; a 30 × 40 cm design is split over several pages with a 5 cm scale bar to check the print size.

How to make a pumpkin stencil from a photo

  1. Choose a photo with a clear subject and a fairly plain background: a face, a pet, a logo or a silhouette. It never leaves your device.
  2. Pick “Shadow (threshold)” for a classic black-and-white carving, or “Outline (edges)” to carve only the contours.
  3. Move the threshold (or the edge sensitivity) until the subject reads well. Black areas are carved out; white areas are the skin that stays.
  4. Add smoothing to remove small details that would be hard to carve, and raise “Minimum bridge” until the thin parts look strong enough.
  5. Tick “Preview as a lit pumpkin” to see how the light will shine through, then enter the stencil width in cm or inches and download the PDF.

The tool reuses the same black-and-white logic as the Black and White Image Threshold and the Photo to Coloring Outline tools, then makes the result carvable.

Bridges: why the stencil holds together

When you carve a closed shape — the centre of an eye, the inside of a letter O — the skin in the middle has nothing to hold on to and falls out. The tool finds every piece of skin that is not connected to the edge of the stencil and adds a vertical bridge of the chosen width that ties it to the skin above. Pieces smaller than a bridge are carved away instead, holes smaller than a bridge are skipped, and skin strips thinner than the bridge are widened.

The summary under the preview counts the bridges added and the pieces removed. Automatic bridges are straight strips: look at the result, and if a bridge crosses an important detail, move the threshold or the smoothing slightly.

Printing at the size of your pumpkin

Measure the face of the pumpkin you want to carve and enter that width; the height follows the photo’s proportions. The PDF uses A4 or US Letter and, when the stencil is larger than one sheet, splits it over several pages to tape edge to edge (landscape pages are used when that saves paper). Print at 100 % (“Actual size”) and check the scale bar on the first page: it must measure exactly 5 cm (or 2 inches).

To print a large picture on several pages without a stencil, use the Poster Splitter; to adjust the contrast of the photo first, try Image Filters.

Questions about Pumpkin Stencil Maker (Photo to Carving Template)

What photo works best for a pumpkin stencil?

A photo with one clear subject, strong light and shadow and a plain background. Busy backgrounds create many small cut-outs; crop the photo first or raise the smoothing.

Are black areas carved or kept?

Black is carved out and white is the skin that stays. Tick Invert to swap them, for example to carve a light subject on a dark background.

What is a bridge on a pumpkin stencil?

A strip of skin that connects an inner part of the design to the rest of the pumpkin so it does not fall out once carved. The tool adds them automatically with the minimum width you choose.

Why is my printed stencil the wrong size?

The printer scaled it. Print the PDF at 100 % or “Actual size”, not “Fit to page”, and check that the scale bar measures 5 cm (or 2 inches).

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The stencil, the PNG and the PDF are all made by your browser on your device.

Is Pumpkin Stencil Maker (Photo to Carving Template) free, and do I need an account?

Yes. This tool is free to use in your browser without an account. Processing takes place on your device.

What are the limits and what should I check?

Up to 40 megapixels; the stencil is worked out at 600, 900 or 1,400 pixels. Automatic bridges are vertical strips: check the result and adjust before carving. Print at 100 % (actual size). Nothing is uploaded. Review image dimensions, transparency and quality before downloading.
