  • An estimate: real change rates vary by day and workload, and incremental size counts each changed block once per day.
  • With block cloning, a synthetic full only stores blocks changed since the previous one, estimated as 1 − (1 − daily change)^days; without it, every full point stores a complete copy. Data that changes the same blocks repeatedly needs less.
  • The 3-2-1 rule: three copies of data, on two different media, one off-site — ideally one immutable or offline copy against ransomware.

Technische opmerkingen in het Engels

An estimate: changes are assumed to fall on random blocks; real workloads often rewrite the same blocks. Product-specific metadata is not included. Everything is calculated in your browser; nothing is sent or probed on the network.

Fulls cost the full size; incrementals cost the daily change; with block cloning, a synthetic full stores the unique change since the previous one, 1 − (1 − c)^days. Totals are divided by data reduction and multiplied by copies and headroom.

10 TB with 3 % daily change, 14 daily, 4 weekly, 12 monthly and 3 yearly points, 2:1 reduction and two copies needs about 177 TB with block cloning.
