Backup Storage Calculator.
Estimate backup storage from data size, change rate, growth, backup scheme, GFS retention, deduplication and off-site copies.
- Protected data after one year of growth
- 12 TB
- Daily changed data
- 360 GB
- Logical backup data
- 147.79 TB
- After compression and deduplication
- 73.9 TB per copy
- Restore points
- 31
- Oldest restore point
- 3 years
One copy before data reduction
| Component | Logical size (TB) |
|---|---|
| Full backups in the daily chain (3) | 16.61 |
| Incrementals (12) | 4.32 |
| Weekly points beyond the daily window (2) | 4.61 |
| Monthly points (12) | 86.25 |
| Yearly points (3) | 36 |
- An estimate: real change rates vary by day and workload, and incremental size counts each changed block once per day.
- With block cloning, a synthetic full only stores blocks changed since the previous one, estimated as 1 − (1 − daily change)^days; without it, every full point stores a complete copy. Data that changes the same blocks repeatedly needs less.
- The 3-2-1 rule: three copies of data, on two different media, one off-site — ideally one immutable or offline copy against ransomware.
How to use Backup Storage Calculator
Enter protected data, daily change and growth, choose the scheme and retention points, then compression, copies and headroom.
How it works
Fulls cost the full size; incrementals cost the daily change; with block cloning, a synthetic full stores the unique change since the previous one, 1 − (1 − c)^days. Totals are divided by data reduction and multiplied by copies and headroom.
Example
10 TB with 3 % daily change, 14 daily, 4 weekly, 12 monthly and 3 yearly points, 2:1 reduction and two copies needs about 177 TB with block cloning.
Questions about Backup Storage Calculator
Is Backup Storage Calculator free, and do I need an account?
Yes. This tool is free to use in your browser without an account. Processing takes place on your device.
What are the limits and what should I check?
An estimate: changes are assumed to fall on random blocks; real workloads often rewrite the same blocks. Product-specific metadata is not included. Everything is calculated in your browser; nothing is sent or probed on the network. Review the result before using it in your work.
Is my input sent to a server?
