An estimate, not a certified meter: device microphones and their processing vary. Everything is calculated in your browser; nothing you type is uploaded.
The microphone signal is analysed in the browser: the RMS level in dB relative to full scale plus the calibration offset; echo cancellation and automatic gain are turned off when possible.
A quiet office reads around 40–50 dB and a busy street 70–80 dB after calibration.
