How to use English Grammar Checker

Paste or type English text. Issues are underlined and listed with an explanation; click a suggestion to apply it. Choose American, British, Australian, Canadian or Indian English.

How it works

Uses Harper (Apache-2.0), an open-source grammar checker written in Rust and compiled to WebAssembly, running entirely in your browser: rules cover agreement, articles, spelling, word choice, punctuation, capitalisation, repetition and style.

Example

In “This is an test… I has a apple”, the checker flags “an” (use “a”), “has” (use “have”) and “a” before “apple” (use “an”).

Check English grammar and spelling

  1. Paste or type your English text. The first visit downloads the grammar engine once (about 16 MB).
  2. Choose your variant in English variant: American, British, Australian, Canadian or Indian English. Spelling such as colour or color follows it.
  3. Issues are underlined in the text and listed with an explanation. Click an underlined word to find it in the list.
  4. Click a suggestion to apply it; the text is checked again at once. Press Copy text when you are done.

Example: in “This is an test. I has a apple.”, the checker flags “an” (use “a”), “has” (use “have”) and “a” before “apple” (use “an”). Applying the three suggestions gives “This is a test. I have an apple.”

What the checker finds

Rules cover subject–verb agreement, articles, spelling, common word confusions such as too and to or its and it’s, words that should be split such as “a lot”, punctuation, capitalisation, repeated words and some style issues. Up to 20,000 characters are checked at a time.

No automatic checker catches every mistake, and suggestions can be wrong in context, so read each one before applying it. To count words or reading time, use the Word Counter; to fix title capitalisation, use the Title Case Converter.

Questions about English Grammar Checker

Is my text sent to a server?

No. The checker is Harper, an open-source engine running as WebAssembly in your browser. Your text never leaves your device.

Does it check languages other than English?

No. Harper checks English only. Text in other languages is likely to be marked as spelling errors.

Why was an error not detected?

Harper follows a set of grammar rules and does not understand meaning, so some mistakes, such as a correctly spelled but wrong word, can pass.

Is English Grammar Checker free, and do I need an account?

Yes. This tool is free to use in your browser without an account. Processing takes place on your device.

What are the limits and what should I check?

English only; up to 20,000 characters are checked at a time. Some errors are not detected and suggestions can be wrong. The first use downloads the engine (about 16 MB), then the browser caches it. Review the result before using it in your work.

Is my input sent to a server?
