Wire Gauge Calculator (AWG to mm²).

Convert AWG wire gauges to diameter and cross-section in mm², find the nearest gauge for a metric size, and get the resistance per length.

Limits & supported formats

Solid round conductors at 20 °C. Current capacity depends on insulation and wiring rules, so it is not given. Everything is calculated in your browser; nothing you type is uploaded.

How to use Wire Gauge Calculator (AWG to mm²)

Start from an AWG gauge, a cross-section or a diameter, choose copper or aluminium and an optional length. The full AWG table highlights the match.

How it works

AWG diameter = 0.127 mm × 92^((36 − n) ÷ 39). Resistance = resistivity ÷ area with 1.724 × 10⁻⁸ Ω·m for copper and 2.82 × 10⁻⁸ Ω·m for aluminium.

Example

12 AWG is 2.0525 mm across with 3.3088 mm², about 5.21 Ω per km in copper; 2.5 mm² is closest to 13 AWG.
