Portal linking also depends on existing portals nearby and the world border. Everything is calculated in your browser; nothing you type is uploaded.
Nether coordinates are Overworld X and Z divided by 8 (rounded down); Y is not scaled. The game searches for an existing portal near the target before creating a new one.
Overworld X 1000, Y 70, Z −2400 becomes Nether X 125, Y 70, Z −300; travelling through the Nether saves about 2,275 blocks.
