How to use Gantt Chart Maker

Start from the project plan template. Each line is a task with an ID, a start date or “after” dependency and a duration. Group tasks in sections, mark milestones and critical tasks, then export the timeline.

How it works

Dates use the format declared by dateFormat, and “excludes weekends” skips Saturdays and Sundays when durations are calculated. Holidays and resource levelling are not calculated. Rendering uses the open-source Mermaid library in your browser with its strict security level, so links, scripts and HTML in labels are disabled. Drafts are saved in this browser only; share links store the compressed code in the part of the URL after #, which browsers do not send to the web server. Exports contain only what you drew.

Example

Wireframes :des1, after d2, 6d → a six-day bar that starts when task d2 ends.

What is a Gantt chart?

A Gantt chart shows a project schedule as horizontal bars on a timeline. Each bar is a task; its position shows when it starts and its length how long it lasts. Dependencies, milestones and the critical path make it easy to see what must finish before something else can begin.

This Gantt chart maker builds the chart from a short task list. Change a duration or a dependency and every following task moves automatically — no spreadsheet formulas and no manual redrawing.

Titletitle Website redesignHeading shown above the chart
Date formatdateFormat YYYY-MM-DDHow start dates are written in your tasks
Sectionsection DesignA group of tasks, such as a phase or team
Tagsdone, active, crit, milestoneCompleted, in progress, critical or milestone

Write tags first, then the ID, start and duration, separated by commas. A milestone has a duration of 0d.

Build a project plan step by step

  1. Write the title and keep dateFormat YYYY-MM-DD unless your dates use another format.
  2. Create one section per phase or team.
  3. Add tasks with an ID and an estimated duration. Give only the first task a fixed date and chain the others with after.
  4. Add excludes weekends so durations count working days. You can also exclude specific dates such as public holidays: excludes weekends, 2026-12-25.
  5. Mark the tasks that would delay the deadline with crit, and add milestones for reviews and launches.
  6. Export the chart and include it in your status report or presentation.

What this Gantt chart does not do

It is a visual planning tool. It does not assign people, balance workloads, track hours or send reminders, and it does not calculate a critical path for you — you decide which tasks are critical. A vertical line marks today; add todayMarker off to hide it. For a high-level roadmap without dates, a timeline or mind map may be simpler; to calculate durations between dates, see the date tools.

Download SVG for documents, websites and slides that need sharp lines at any size, or PNG at 1× to 4× resolution for chat apps, tickets and tools that do not accept SVG. The background can match the theme, be white or be transparent.

Rendering happens in your browser with the open-source Mermaid library. Your code is not uploaded, drafts are kept in this browser’s local storage, and a share link stores the compressed diagram after the # sign, which browsers do not send to the web server.

Questions about Gantt Chart Maker

How do I make one task start after another?

Give the first task an ID, for example design, and write after design as the start of the next task. The second bar moves whenever the first changes.

Can a task depend on several tasks?

Yes. Write after a b; the task starts when the later of the listed tasks ends.

How do I skip weekends and holidays?

Add excludes weekends and list specific dates after it, separated by commas. Durations then count only the remaining days.

Can I import tasks from Excel?

Not directly. You can copy task names and dates from a spreadsheet and turn each row into a task line; the format is short and easy to fill in.

Is this Gantt chart maker free?

Yes. There is no account, no watermark and no limit on the number of charts. Your plan stays in your browser.

Is Gantt Chart Maker free, and do I need an account?

Yes. This tool is free to use in your browser without an account. Processing takes place on your device.

What are the limits and what should I check?
