How to use TAR, TAR.GZ & TGZ Extractor
Drop a TAR, TAR.GZ, TGZ, TAR.BZ2, TAR.XZ or GZ file on the page. Browse or filter the list, preview a file, download it, or use Download all as ZIP or Extract all to a folder.
How it works
TAR archives with gzip, bzip2, xz or zstd compression are read by libarchive compiled to WebAssembly (libarchive.js); single .gz files are decompressed with fflate. Unix permissions and symbolic links are not recreated.
Example
A project.tar.gz source archive opens as a folder tree of files; a single log.gz file is decompressed back to log.
Open a TAR.GZ file and extract it
- Drop the TAR.GZ file on the page, or press
Choose a file. - The list shows every file with its folder and size. Type in
Filter files…to find one quickly. - Click a file name to preview text files and images; press ⬇ to download that file alone.
- Press
Download all as ZIPto get one ZIP file, orExtract all to a folder…in Chrome or Edge to write the files directly to a folder you choose.
You do not need a command line or extra software. The archive is read by libarchive compiled to WebAssembly, in a background worker of your browser: the file is never uploaded, and only the files you open are unpacked.
Supported files and limits
TAR archives with gzip (.tar.gz, .tgz), bzip2 (.tar.bz2), xz (.tar.xz) or zstd compression are supported, and a single .gz file is decompressed back to the original file. Unix permissions and symbolic links are not recreated.
Archives up to 500 MB with up to 10,000 files and 2 GB unpacked; ZIP download up to 1 GB unpacked. Download all as ZIP also converts the archive: ZIP files open on every computer and phone without extra software.
To make an archive instead, use the ZIP Creator; to open a ZIP file, use the ZIP Extractor.
