Steps to use ACA Subsidy Calculator 2027 (Premium Tax Credit)

How ACA Subsidy Calculator 2027 (Premium Tax Credit) processes your input
2027 applicable percentages from IRS Rev. Proc. 2026-26 (2.15 % to 10.22 %, rising in a straight line within each band, no credit above 400 %) and the 2026 HHS poverty guidelines for the 48 states, Alaska and Hawaii; employer affordability limit 10.22 %.
ACA Subsidy Calculator 2027 (Premium Tax Credit): worked example
Couple, $62,000 income (286.5 % of the poverty line), $1,100 benchmark: expected contribution 9.80 % = $6,075 a year, credit about $594 a month.
How to estimate your 2027 ACA subsidy
- Enter the number of people on your tax return and where you live (48 states and DC, Alaska or Hawaii have different poverty lines).
- Enter your expected 2027 household income (modified adjusted gross income).
- Look up the benchmark premium — the second-lowest-cost Silver plan for your household and ZIP code — on healthcare.gov/see-plans or your state marketplace, and enter it with the premium of the plan you want.
Example: a couple with $62,000 of income is at 286.5 % of the poverty line. Their applicable percentage is 9.80 %, so they are expected to pay $6,075 a year ($506 a month) for the benchmark plan. With a $1,100 benchmark, the premium tax credit is about $594 a month, and a $950 plan costs them about $356.
2027 applicable percentages and the 400 % cliff
| Income (% of poverty line) | Share of income you pay for the benchmark plan |
|---|---|
| Less than 133 % | 2.15 % |
| 133 % to less than 150 % | 3.23 % → 4.3 % |
| 150 % to less than 200 % | 4.3 % → 6.78 % |
| 200 % to less than 250 % | 6.78 % → 8.66 % |
| 250 % to less than 300 % | 8.66 % → 10.22 % |
| 300 % to 400 % | 10.22 % |
| Above 400 % | No credit |
The enhanced credits of 2021–2025 expired at the end of 2025, so the 400 % limit is back for 2027 coverage: one dollar above it removes the whole credit. For 2027 coverage the 2026 poverty guidelines apply; 400 % is $63,840 for one person, $86,560 for two and $132,000 for four in the 48 states. A couple earning $90,000 is $3,440 over and loses a credit of about $4,354 a year: putting $3,440 more into a traditional 401(k), or into an HSA if they have an HSA-eligible plan, would bring them back under the line. Check your room with the HSA Contribution Calculator.
Employer coverage and other checks
Choose “Is my employer’s 2027 plan affordable?” to test the employer offer: the employee-only premium must not exceed 10.22 % of household income. Family members are tested separately with the family premium, so they may qualify for a credit even when you do not.
Open enrollment for 2027 starts on 1 November 2026; enroll by 15 December for coverage from 1 January. The credit paid in advance is reconciled on your 2027 tax return, so report income changes during the year. To see how pre-tax savings change your tax as well, use the Tax Bracket Calculator; the 50/30/20 Budget Calculator helps fit the net premium into your budget.
Questions about ACA Subsidy Calculator 2027 (Premium Tax Credit)
Is the 400 % FPL cliff back in 2027?
Yes. The enhanced premium tax credits that removed it expired on 31 December 2025, so households above 400 % of the poverty line get no credit for 2027 coverage, unless Congress changes the law.
Which poverty guidelines are used for 2027 coverage?
The 2026 HHS guidelines published in January 2026: $15,960 for one person plus $5,680 per extra person in the 48 states and DC, with higher amounts for Alaska and Hawaii.
Where do I find the benchmark premium?
On healthcare.gov/see-plans (or your state marketplace), enter your ZIP code and household: the second-lowest-cost Silver plan is the benchmark. It depends on everyone’s age and where you live, so the calculator asks for it rather than guessing.
What if my income is below 100 % of the poverty line?
You are generally not eligible for the premium tax credit. Most states cover adults up to 138 % of the poverty line through Medicaid; check your state’s rules.
Is ACA Subsidy Calculator 2027 (Premium Tax Credit) free, and do I need an account?
Yes. This tool is free to use in your browser without an account. Processing takes place on your device.
What are the limits and what should I check?
An estimate, not tax advice. You enter the benchmark premium (no plan database). Medicaid and CHIP eligibility, state subsidies and the reconciliation on Form 8962 are not computed. Nothing is uploaded. Review the result before using it in your work.
