Steps to use HSA Contribution Calculator 2027

Choose the year, your HDHP coverage and whether you are 55 or older, then the months you are eligible. Enter what you and your employer put in: the room left, any excess and your tax saving update as you type.

How HSA Contribution Calculator 2027 processes your input

Limits from IRS Rev. Proc. 2026-24 (2027: $4,500 / $9,000, HDHP minimum deductible $1,750 / $3,500, out-of-pocket maximum $8,700 / $17,400) and Rev. Proc. 2025-19 (2026); $1,000 catch-up; monthly proration and the testing period of the last-month rule.

HSA Contribution Calculator 2027: worked example

2027 family coverage, age 56, eligible all year: $9,000 + $1,000 catch-up = $10,000; with $4,000 through payroll and $1,500 from the employer, $4,500 can still be added.

2027 HSA contribution limits

Limit20262027
Self-only coverage$4,400$4,500
Family coverage$8,750$9,000
Catch-up, age 55 or older$1,000$1,000
HDHP minimum deductible (self / family)$1,700 / $3,400$1,750 / $3,500
HDHP out-of-pocket maximum (self / family)$8,500 / $17,000$8,700 / $17,400

The 2027 amounts come from IRS Rev. Proc. 2026-24 and the 2026 amounts from Rev. Proc. 2025-19. The $1,000 catch-up is set by law and is not indexed to inflation. Employer contributions, including cafeteria-plan money, count toward the same limit as yours.

Work out how much you can still contribute

  1. Choose the year and your high-deductible health plan (HDHP) coverage: self-only, or family if the plan covers you and at least one other person.
  2. Tick 55 or older if you reach 55 by 31 December, then enter the number of months you are eligible on the first day of the month.
  3. Enter what you contributed through payroll or directly, and what your employer put in. The room left, any excess and your estimated tax saving appear at once.

Example: family coverage in 2027, age 56, eligible all year: $9,000 + $1,000 = $10,000. With $4,000 through payroll and $1,500 from the employer, $4,500 can still be added. If you only become eligible in June (7 months) with self-only coverage, the pro-rata limit is $4,500 × 7 / 12 = $2,625.

Last-month rule, excess contributions and tax savings

  • Last-month rule: if you are eligible on 1 December, you may contribute the full year’s limit, but you must stay HSA-eligible until 31 December of the following year. Otherwise the extra amount becomes taxable income plus a 10 % additional tax.
  • Too much in the account? Excess contributions are taxed 6 % for each year they stay. Ask your HSA provider to remove the excess and its earnings before your tax-filing deadline.
  • Tax saving: contributions are deductible from federal income tax, and payroll contributions also avoid the 7.65 % Social Security and Medicare tax. $3,000 through payroll at a 22 % bracket and a 5 % state tax saves about $1,039.50. California and New Jersey tax HSA contributions.
  • Medicare: you cannot contribute for months in which you are enrolled in any part of Medicare.

An HSA contribution also lowers the income used for the ACA premium tax credit: see the ACA Subsidy Calculator. Your bracket comes from the Tax Bracket Calculator, and long-term saving can be compared with the Retirement Contributions Projection.

Questions about HSA Contribution Calculator 2027

What is the HSA limit for 2027?

$4,500 for self-only coverage and $9,000 for family coverage, plus $1,000 if you are 55 or older (IRS Rev. Proc. 2026-24).

Does my employer’s contribution count toward the limit?

Yes. Everything that goes into your HSA for the year — your payroll deductions, direct deposits and employer money — shares one limit.

Can both spouses make a catch-up contribution?

Yes, if both are 55 or older and HSA-eligible, but each catch-up must go into that spouse’s own HSA. The family limit itself is shared between spouses.

Until when can I contribute for 2027?

Until the tax-filing deadline for 2027, usually mid-April 2028. Tell your HSA provider which year a contribution is for.
