US Federal Tax Bracket Calculator 2026 / 2027: worked example

Single, $85,000 in 2026: taxable income $68,900 after the $16,100 standard deduction; tax $9,870 (22 % bracket, 11.61 % effective rate).

What tax bracket am I in?

  1. Choose 2026 (official IRS figures) or 2027 (projected until the IRS publishes them) and your filing status.
  2. Enter your gross income for the year and your pre-tax contributions, such as a traditional 401(k), an HSA or a deductible IRA.
  3. Keep the standard deduction, or choose itemized deductions and enter their total.

The result shows your taxable income, the tax in each bracket, your marginal rate (the bracket of your last dollar) and your effective rate (total tax divided by gross income). Example: single, $85,000 in 2026 → taxable income $68,900 after the $16,100 standard deduction, tax $9,870, 22 % bracket, 11.61 % effective rate.

Standard deduction: $16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly and $24,150 head of household in 2026 (Rev. Proc. 2025-32); projected $16,600, $33,200 and $24,900 for 2027. The 2027 brackets are a Thomson Reuters Checkpoint projection based on inflation data; the page is updated when the IRS publishes the official revenue procedure, expected in late October or November 2026.

Marginal vs effective tax rate

A higher bracket only taxes the dollars above its threshold. With $85,000 single in 2026, only $18,500 of taxable income is taxed at 22 %; the rest is taxed at 10 % and 12 %, so the effective rate is 11.61 %. A $1,000 raise costs $220 of federal income tax, not 22 % of your whole salary.

Pre-tax contributions lower the taxable income at your marginal rate: $10,000 into a traditional 401(k) brings the tax above from $9,870 to $7,670. Questions about US Federal Tax Bracket Calculator 2026 / 2027

What are the 2027 tax brackets?

The IRS had not published them on 16 October 2026. The projection used here (Thomson Reuters Checkpoint) puts the single 10 % bracket at $12,800 and the 37 % rate above $661,375, with a $16,600 standard deduction. They are labelled “projected” until the official figures replace them.

Does moving into a higher bracket reduce my take-home pay?

No. Only the income above the bracket threshold is taxed at the higher rate, so earning more always leaves you with more after federal income tax.

Which income is included?

Ordinary income: wages, self-employment profit, interest, short-term gains. Long-term capital gains and qualified dividends have their own 0/15/20 % rates and are not computed here, nor are credits, state taxes or the alternative minimum tax.

Should I itemize?

Only if your itemized deductions (mortgage interest, state and local taxes within the cap, charity…) exceed the standard deduction. The calculator warns you when the itemized total is lower.

Is US Federal Tax Bracket Calculator 2026 / 2027 free, and do I need an account?
