How JPG to JXL Converter (Convert to JPEG XL) processes your input

Images are encoded with the open-source libjxl encoder compiled to WebAssembly (Squoosh), on your device, with quality 10–100 or lossless mode. EXIF metadata such as GPS position is removed.

JPG to JXL Converter (Convert to JPEG XL): worked example

A holiday photo saved as JPEG XL at quality 85 is usually smaller than the same photo as a quality-85 JPG; the comparison shows the exact sizes for your own image.

Convert JPG or PNG to JPEG XL

  1. Add JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC or other images (up to 50 at a time, nothing is uploaded).
  2. Keep JPEG XL and quality 85, lower it for smaller files, or tick Lossless to keep every pixel.
  3. Press Convert images and download the .jxl files one by one or as a ZIP.

The encoder is the open-source libjxl library compiled to WebAssembly, running on your device. Metadata such as GPS position is removed, which is useful before sharing photos.

Is JPEG XL smaller than JPG, WebP and AVIF?

Often, but it depends on the picture. Press Compare JPG, WebP, AVIF and JPEG XL sizes to encode the first image in the four formats with the same quality setting and see the exact file sizes for your own photo. Quality numbers are not equivalent between formats, so compare the images visually too.

  • JPEG XL: very good for high-quality photos and lossless images; displayed by Chrome 155 and later and Safari 17 and later.
  • AVIF: excellent at small sizes and widely supported by current browsers.
  • WebP: supported almost everywhere, usually smaller than JPG.
  • JPG: opens everywhere; the safest choice for email and older software.

Before you publish JPEG XL images

Not every browser, app or website accepts .jxl files yet, so keep a JPG or WebP fallback for a website, or use the HTML picture element. Lossless JPEG recompression, which keeps the original JPG bytes inside the JPEG XL file, is not offered here: images are decoded and re-encoded.

To open .jxl files you received, use JXL to JPG or JXL to PNG. The Image Converter covers every other format, and the Image Resizer shrinks large photos first.

Questions about JPG to JXL Converter (Convert to JPEG XL)

Which browsers can show JPEG XL?

Chrome 155 and later (rolled out in October 2026) and Safari 17 and later display it. Check other browsers and apps before relying on it, and keep a fallback format for older ones.

Is “Lossless” the same as lossless JPEG recompression?

No. Lossless here keeps every decoded pixel, so the file is larger than a lossy one. Rebuilding the exact original JPG from the JPEG XL file is not supported by this tool.

What quality should I use?

85 is a good balance for photos. Use 90 or more for photos you will edit again, and compare sizes with the comparison button.

Is JPG to JXL Converter (Convert to JPEG XL) free, and do I need an account?

Yes. This tool is free to use in your browser without an account. Processing takes place on your device.
