Steps to use JXL to JPG Converter (JPEG XL to JPG)
Add your .jxl files, keep JPG or change the quality, then press Convert images. Download each file or all of them as a ZIP; the size comparison button encodes the first image in JPG, WebP, AVIF and JPEG XL.
How JXL to JPG Converter (JPEG XL to JPG) processes your input
JPEG XL files are decoded by the open-source libjxl codec compiled to WebAssembly (Squoosh), so the converter works even where the browser cannot display .jxl, then saved with MozJPEG. EXIF metadata is not kept.
JXL to JPG Converter (JPEG XL to JPG): worked example
A JPEG XL photo saved by a recent phone or camera app becomes a quality-90 JPG that opens in any viewer; transparent areas are filled with the background colour you choose (white by default).
Convert JXL to JPG in three steps
- Drop your .jxl files on the page, choose them with the button or paste them with Ctrl+V. Up to 50 images at a time.
- Keep JPG and quality 90, or lower the quality for smaller files; choose the background colour that replaces transparent areas.
- Press Convert images, then download each JPG or all of them as a ZIP.
The JPEG XL decoder is open-source code compiled to WebAssembly and runs on your device, so the conversion works even in a browser that cannot display .jxl files. Nothing is uploaded.
What is a JXL file and how do I open it?
JXL is the file extension of JPEG XL, an image format standardised as ISO/IEC 18181. It compresses photos better than JPG at the same visual quality, supports transparency, HDR and lossless mode, and can repack an existing JPG without loss.
Chrome 155 (rolled out in October 2026) and Safari 17 and later display JPEG XL images; older browsers, many photo viewers, office suites and websites still do not. Converting to JPG gives a file that opens everywhere; choose JXL to PNG instead if you need to keep transparency.
Compare sizes before you choose
After adding a file, press Compare JPG, WebP, AVIF and JPEG XL sizes: the first image is encoded in the four formats with your quality setting so you can see which is smallest. Quality scales are not identical between formats, so look at the result before deciding.
To go the other way, use JPG to JXL. The Image Converter handles every other format pair, and the Image Compressor shrinks the JPG further if needed.
Questions about JXL to JPG Converter (JPEG XL to JPG)
How do I open a JXL file on Windows or Android?
Recent Chrome versions display it directly. For other apps, convert it to JPG or PNG here: the converted file opens in any viewer, editor or messaging app.
Does converting JXL to JPG lose quality?
JPG is lossy, so a little detail is lost; at quality 90 the difference is rarely visible. For a lossless copy, convert to PNG instead.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. Decoding and encoding run in your browser with WebAssembly; the files never leave your device.
What happens to animated JPEG XL files?
Only the first frame is converted. Metadata such as GPS position is removed from the JPG.
Is JXL to JPG Converter (JPEG XL to JPG) free, and do I need an account?
Yes. This tool is free to use in your browser without an account. Processing takes place on your device.
What are the limits and what should I check?
Up to 50 images per batch, 50 MB and 50 megapixels each. Animated JPEG XL files keep only the first frame. The JPEG XL decoder runs on your device in every browser; nothing is uploaded. Review image dimensions, transparency and quality before downloading.
