JPEG XL is decoded by libjxl compiled to WebAssembly, then written as PNG and optimised losslessly (OxiPNG), all on your device. 16-bit images are reduced to 8 bits per channel.

PNG is lossless, so every pixel of the decoded JPEG XL image is kept, including transparent and semi-transparent areas. Images with 16 bits per channel are saved with 8 bits per channel.
When to choose PNG rather than JPG
- Logos, icons, screenshots and graphics with sharp edges or transparency: PNG keeps them exact.
- Photos: PNG files are much larger than the original JPEG XL; JXL to JPG is usually the better choice.
- Editing: PNG opens in every editor and keeps quality when you save it again, unlike JPG.

Does JXL to PNG keep transparency?
Yes. The alpha channel of the JPEG XL image is written to the PNG unchanged.
Why is my PNG bigger than the JXL file?
JPEG XL compresses much more efficiently. A lossless PNG of a photo can be several times larger; use Reduce colours for graphics or convert photos to JPG.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The image is decoded and saved in your browser, on your device.

What are the limits and what should I check?
Up to 50 images per batch, 50 MB and 50 megapixels each. Animated JPEG XL files keep only the first frame. PNG files of photos are much larger than the original JPEG XL. Nothing is uploaded. Review image dimensions, transparency and quality before downloading.
Is my input sent to a server?
