How Social Security COLA Calculator 2027 processes your input

COLA, SSI, earnings test and taxable maximum from the SSA 2027 fact sheet (14 October 2026); COLA history from the SSA Office of the Chief Actuary; the Medicare hold-harmless rule is applied when the Part B increase exceeds the raise.

Social Security COLA Calculator 2027: worked example

$2,095 a month × 1.036 = $2,170.40, a raise of $75.40 a month or $904.80 a year (the SSA estimate for the average retired worker is $2,170).

How much will my Social Security increase in 2027?

The Social Security Administration announced a 3.6 % cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) on 14 October 2026. It applies to benefits for December 2026, paid in January 2027, and to SSI payments from 31 December 2026.

  1. Enter your current monthly benefit before Medicare is deducted (it is on your benefit letter or in my Social Security).
  2. If Medicare Part B is taken from your check, keep the option on and check the 2026 premium ($202.90 for most people).
  3. Enter the 2027 Part B premium when CMS announces it, usually in mid-November; until then the field starts at the 2026 amount.

Example: $2,095 a month × 1.036 = $2,170.40, a raise of $75.40 a month or $904.80 a year. SSA’s own estimate for the average retired worker is the same: $2,095 before, $2,170 after the COLA.

Net check, Medicare Part B and the hold-harmless rule

Your net payment is the new benefit minus the Part B premium, rounded down to the dollar. If the Part B increase is larger than your dollar raise, the hold-harmless rule limits the premium increase so your net check does not go down. Example: a $300 benefit rises by $10.80; if Part B went from $202.90 to $220, only $10.80 of the increase would be deducted and the net check stays at $97.

Hold harmless does not protect people who pay the income-related premium (IRMAA), new Medicare enrollees or people whose premium is paid by Medicaid; turn the option off in those cases. Medicare Part D and Medicare Advantage premiums and tax withholding are not included.
